Sources

Every statement in the archive was checked, claim by claim, against a source that could be read online, and every number, date and quotation that could not be confirmed was softened or removed. This page lists those sources: the citations behind each essay slide, the documents and references behind each of the 54 nations, and the origin and licence of every image. Quotations appear only where the wording was found in a citable text.

The archive is compiled from secondary sources, principally the Library of Congress country studies, Britannica, Wikipedia and university and government archives, cross-checked against primary documents wherever they are online: independence acts, transfer agreements, United Nations resolutions, constitutions and referendum records. Corrections are welcome by email.
